Adult Swim's Premier New Show of This Year Gets a Substantial Renewal for Two More Seasons.
Last October, Adult Swim saw the return of its quirky hit, Smiling Friends. But, shortly thereafter, the network unveiled a completely new animated series with a strikingly different vibe. Haha, You Clowns emerged as gentle and comforting, evoking a animated take of a serene talk show. In an era often marked by cynicism, this show's sincerity found an audience and helped it become a surprise hit.
A Significant Investment
On December 18th, the network made a major announcement: Haha, You Clowns has been picked up for two additional seasons. This offers showrunner Joe Cappa a massive runway to expand upon the world of the Campbell family. The show focuses on three well-mannered teenage brothers whose defining trait is their profound affection for their single father, with Cappa voicing for all four key characters.
"My deepest thanks go to the viewers of the show who gave *Haha, You Clowns* a chance and shared it with others," stated Cappa. "I am overjoyed that I get to spend more time in the Campbell household for seasons to come."
A President's Endorsement
Accompanying the news laudits from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "radically heartfelt and uniquely eerie." He specifically highlighted the fans who discovered the show and advocated for its distinctly quirky appeal.
"All of you supported this new show, praised it on social media, and grew it week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," commented Ouweleen. "In the words: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Different Kind of Comedy
Earlier this fall, Haha, You Clowns was praised as "a comforting antidote" to other adult animated fare. There’s something surprisingly comfy about following this endearing family navigate their daily lives.
Previously, creator Joe Cappa shared his hope to help comedy break out of its prevailing cynical streak. He linked this trend to the rise of certain blockbuster franchises.
“There's this level of irony that we are trapped in,” said Cappa. “The attitude is that we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for a decade, and we need to laugh at something different now. It's time for comedy to grow.”
The Path Forward
With this renewal, with Haha, You Clowns locked in for the future, Cappa could potentially be part of that very evolution. At a minimum, the renewal ensures audiences additional episodes to bask in the heartfelt moments of the beloved Campbell clan.
The first season's conclusion of Haha, You Clowns airs on December 21st. The complete first season is ready to watch on HBO Max.
