Arnaud Kalimuendo Scores as Nottingham Forest Secure Nostalgic Win Against Malmö
“You’ll never sing that, champions of Europe,” was chanted around the ground as Nottingham Forest supporters reveled in another success against their Swedish opponents. A great deal has occurred since Trevor Francis’s decisive header secured the continental trophy back in the year 1979, but Forest continue to treasure those glorious moments. Equally, significant shifts have taken place in the weeks since the manager assumed control, with the team looking refreshed and earning a convincing victory courtesy of goals from Kalimuendo, Yates, and Milenkovic, enhancing their hopes of progressing in the Europa League.
Building Momentum with Another Straight Win
For Nottingham Forest, this performance – against a Swedish side that had been inactive for almost three weeks after finishing in sixth place in their domestic league – represented a third consecutive triumph across all competitions and added to the positive energy gained from the previous week's success at Liverpool. While this fixture was a re-run of the club's European Cup triumph in spirit, the encounter itself was devoid of any real tension or jitters.
It proved to be an occasion dripping in nostalgia, an eagerly awaited reunion and the third competitive clash between the sides since the showpiece event 46 years ago.
The home side leaned into the heritage, honoring the legends of that era by providing them, along with their Malmö counterparts, the VIP welcome. Thirteen members of the Malmö's squad from then were additionally present. The two clubs enjoyed a dinner together before the kick-off. Frank Clark, Colin Barrett and their teammates received a rousing welcome when they assembled on the field a quarter of an hour before kick-off, and a typically impressive tifo was unveiled in the home stand.
Recalling History
“May 30, 1979, Robertson crossed it in from the left flank,” displayed half of a giant tifo, in capital letters. While nobody required a reminder of what ensued, the rest was revealed as the players came out from the tunnel. “And there’s Francis,” it stated. A second stunning tifo showed Brian Clough watching events beside his right-hand man Taylor on a dugout at the Olympiastadion.
Dominance from the Start
So, Forest had drunk in those wonderful memories, but what about the performance on the night? It was pretty good, as well. They were in full command from the moment the forward whistled an effort off target inside the opening moments and established a 2-0 lead by the break. Nicolás Domínguez sent an early header off target and then Abbott, on his first European start, had a go.
It felt fitting that Ryan Yates, who joined the club as an eight-year-old, made the initial breakthrough in the visitors' defense captained by their own academy product captain, Jansson, previously of Leeds and Brentford FC. The home defender Milenkovic saw a delivery cannon off a opponent and into the path of Yates, who finished with his right foot from just inside the box to score his maiden strike since March.
Second Strike Seals Dominance
Yates was implicated in Forest’s second goal on the verge of the interval, as well, his free header saved by Malmö’s goalkeeper Melker Ellborg but the alert forward on hand to convert the rebound from point-blank range. McAtee, the midfielder given a seldom start and just his second appearance since September, was the spark, chipping a perfect ball towards Yates at the far post.
A minute earlier, Callum Hudson-Odoi low effort was turned wide off the back Rösler, son of former Manchester City striker Uwe, and an free Milenkovic had earlier had a strong header instinctively repelled by Ellborg, who was back in place of the ex- Villa goalkeeper Olsen.
Malmö’s Struggles
This was the Swedish side's initial game since the Swedish Allsvenskan concluded on 9 November, and they struggled to match the home team's energy. Forest made it 3-0 when the defender applied the finishing touch after his centre-back partner Murillo kept alive a corner. The captain had a shot blocked, but the Serbia defender Milenkovic feasted on the rebound.
The home side then pushed for more, with Hudson-Odoi chipping a right-foot shot on to the crossbar before Ibrahim Sangaré sent an optimistic effort wide from distance. It was one of those nights. Dyche, mindful of Sunday’s league game here against Brighton, made seven changes from the side that surprised Liverpool at their ground last weekend, when they also netted three goals, though he introduced Elliot Anderson, Dan Ndoye and Igor Jesus midway through the second half.
Hiccup-Free Night for the Team
It turned out to be a flawless evening for Forest. The coach could take off Murillo with the game long since boxed off and subsequently brought on 19-year-old defender Jimmy Sinclair for his senior bow. Dyche talked about the Forest old guard providing “valuable insights” at weekly get-togethers and, nearly fifty years on, the current crop demonstrated they are capable of producing of thrills, too.
