Biden Bowl, Anyone? Meloni to Auction Off International Gifts for Charity

Relinquishing unneeded offerings might be viewed as a little discourteous – unless it's done in the proper manner.

A Charitable Auction

The Italian premier, Giorgia Meloni, plans to auction an estimated 270 items bestowed upon her by international figures while abroad. The eclectic collection reportedly features gifts including a chainsaw-wielding statuette of Argentina's leader Javier Milei and a pair of blue python skin shoes with gold heels.

The presents, combined, have an approximate value of €800,000. They are scheduled to be sold to the highest bidder by a Italian art dealer. The specific date is yet to be set, but the aim is to conduct the sale before Christmas, with all funds raised going to various charities.

Palazzo Chigi Treasures

The presents reportedly kept in a secure area on the third floor of Palazzo Chigi. It has been reported that Meloni additionally intending to auction off gifts given to her political forerunners that have been sitting unused over a long period.

The full gift list remains disclosed, but some insight emerged earlier this year when a detailed register of all declared gifts was submitted to lawmakers. The question centered on if a legal value limit was being respected. By law, a prime minister is not permitted to keep presents valued above €300.

An International Assortment of Gifts

The collection includes:

  • A woven wrap from the leader of Albania, reportedly presented to Meloni for her birthday during a meeting abroad.
  • A traditional Kerala dress from the Indian leader.
  • A box of jewellery from the Slovakian president.
  • A porcelain tea set and a selection of wines from Hungary's leader.
  • A pottery dish from the former US president.
  • A tablet from the Ukrainian president.
  • Watercolour paintings from the Moldovan government.
  • Additional objects including makeup, a skateboard, and numerous carpets from trips to North African and Middle Eastern countries.
"Maybe the strangest gifts were the Milei figurine and the blue python skin shoes," reports suggest.

Diplomatic Context

The prime minister has received praise, mainly from within her party, with winning over international counterparts and re-establishing Italy as a significant player on the international platform once again.

This charitable initiative represents a novel approach to manage the state presents that accumulate during a political career.
