A trio of officers were killed and more than a dozen others were hurt in a seemingly intentional gas explosion at a farmhouse in Italy's north.

Sequence of Events

The explosion took place as police and firefighters went into the house in the vicinity of Verona to execute an removal notice for two brothers and a sister in their late 50s and mid-60s.

All three officers killed were members of the Carabinieri military police.

Investigation Developments

One male and one female were arrested at the location and a third person who escaped after the blast was apprehended not long after. All three have been transported to hospital.

The blast could be noticed as far as 3 miles distant and footage from the scene displayed the building reduced to a mass of wreckage.

“This moment calls for sorrow,” stated the Minister of the Interior the Interior Minister, who noted that attempts had been made to remove the brother and sister trio in the previous occasions.

The leader of the Veneto region, the regional head, stated the residence was under an removal notice due to financial obligations accrued by the siblings.

“As we went inside, we encountered a completely deranged action,” regional commander the police commander informed reporters.

The wounded by the explosion included eleven more officers of the Carabinieri as well as a trio of personnel of national police and a emergency responder.

According to the prosecuting attorney, the building was in a dilapidated shape and had no electricity.

He was convinced the detonation had taken place on a story above the doorway and informed the press it was a “premeditated and voluntary homicide”. Shortly before the explosion, he revealed members had “noticed a hissing sound, probably the gas cylinders being activated”.

“All of us understood the scenario was critical,” local residents stated to Italian media, mentioning that the three had earlier warned to “detonate the property” rather than be evicted.

The Defense Minister Minister Crosetto stood alongside other elected representatives in honoring the three officers who had lost their lives in the service of their country.
