A renowned South African media personality and entertainer has been shot dead in the country's largest city Johannesburg, sending shockwaves across a nation battling persistent crime.

Warrick Stock, popularly known as DJ Warras, was gunned down in the central business district on Tuesday afternoon.

Authorities reported the 40-year-old media personality was accosted by a trio of assailants, one of whom shot at him before escaping on foot.

The motive of the shooting remains unclear and no one has been arrested have taken place, according to authorities.

The Fatal Incident

Police revealed that Stock was ambushed as he was exiting a location near the Carlton Centre.

He had spent several hours at the property overseeing the implementation of safety equipment, which had been illegally inhabited by unknown people, it was reported.

"Authorities believe the victim was confronted by three unidentified men after parking his vehicle, and they opened fire at him before running from the location on foot," authorities said.

Security camera video reportedly captured a suspect with dreadlocked hair and clad in what looked like a guard's attire firing shots on Stock before making his escape.

The DJ attempted to flee after he was wounded but fell down on the opposite side of the road.

It was further revealed that Stock had an unused firearm and it was not a robbery during the assault.

Important clues, like cartridges, were found at the scene.

Police have appealed eyewitnesses who may have witnessed the attack to come forward.

"Evidence suggests they traveled on foot after the shooting, and police have been tracking them to establish their whereabouts," remarked an authority figure.

"I am in shock. I cannot express the pain," she stated.
