The sport of boxing has been a notable downturn this year, with a scarcity of big events and far less compelling bouts than typical. The prospect of a serious and intriguing heavyweight contest between Parker and Fabio Wardley at the London's O₂ Arena brings a measure of relief to the struggling sport. The winner will almost certainly face Oleksandr Usyk next season. In stark contrast, the unsuccessful boxer is probably going to mourn the unavoidable deterioration of their hard-won plaudits.

He consistently rises but Wardley punches with greater force than any fighter he's fought – with the exception of Wilder who seemed a shadow of a devastating finisher when Parker swept to a dominant decision win in the end of 2023.

Wardley, who began in white-collar boxing, who only took up boxing when he was 20 years old, had no amateur experience and has always had to overcome questions regarding his technical limitations. But he is similarly close to a world title challenge.

“This is the most important contest, at the moment, in the heavyweight class. These two guys have taken a risk when neither one had to agree to this match. Joe Parker is the WBO interim champion and they have previously mandated the champion to fight him, but he was sidelined. Parker insists on fighting.

“Fabio is similarly well-placed and he merely needed to be patient for his opportunity. He said ‘No, thanks.’ He chose to box – and versus Parker because it gives him a chance to skip the line.”

Parker’s Perspective

Parker, set to be 34 in January, said: “This is do or die. I am not considering defeat. I have respect for my rival and his achievements and his preparation for this contest. But I am on a superior tier and I am intending to prove it on fight night.”

Wardley's Stance

Wardley, approaching 31, and he said: “It is a massive night for the pair of us. It is clearly the most significant bout of my career and the greatest challenge I've faced. But each time I rise to the occasion I elevate my performance. The upcoming fight will be no different. The gap between Parker's status and my perceived standing has been a common theme throughout my career.

“He's a seasoned veteran for a extended duration, with a many bouts on his resume. By no means is he an aged fighter but he has been in the game for a while and had several tough bouts. I’ve been in a few wars myself and I know they put miles on the clock. He has been in a far greater number of those fights than I have.”

But the suspicion remains that Parker will be too experienced, and too technically proficient, for Wardley. He is favored to secure a hard-fought contest with the belief that he is next in line for a title shot against Usyk – the undisputed best in the division by a significant margin.
