New York Jets Head Coach Aaron Glenn Confident Kris Boyd Will Make a Full Recovery After NYC Shooting
New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn has stated that he has been in contact with defensive back Kris Boyd and feels certain the athlete will recover well after suffering a gunshot wound in midtown Manhattan early Sunday morning.
Glenn described that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was “positive” during a recent discussion.
“That’s what eases my mind, is that his mood is upbeat,” Glenn said Wednesday. “His wife and his kid, they are doing well and he will come through this without issue.”
It remained unclear when Boyd could be discharged the medical facility, where he is reported as in critical but steady condition.
“Don’t know just yet,” he added. “But I will say this, just talking to him, his attitude was encouraging. Once more, that reassures me, that he feels like that and his words reflect that optimism.”
NYPD shared security footage earlier this week of an individual wanted in the incident involving Boyd. What prompted the attack remains under investigation and officials stated it remains uncertain if Boyd was the intended victim. There were no additional victims as confirmed by officials.
The attack took place around 2 a.m. on Sunday morning in the area between the famous arena and the bustling tourist spot. Boyd, twenty-nine, was admitted to a local hospital after being shot in the abdomen, police said. The shooter fled the scene.
Glenn said Boyd has occupied his thinking “constantly” since he heard about the shooting. Glenn added that Boyd and his spouse are new parents to a child.
“What immediately crossed my mind, he just had a kid,” Glenn noted. “And I’m thinking about his wife, considering his child and I want to make sure that he’s OK. Those thoughts dominated my thinking.
“A certain process is underway, which I won’t get into, but It is reassuring that his outcome looks very positive.”
Boyd hasn’t played in the present campaign, his first with the Jets, after going on the season-ending injured reserve list on August 18 with a shoulder injury that involved surgical repair.
He signed with New York as a new signing in March and was expected to be a significant contributor of an improved special teams group under the coach and special teams coordinator the special teams coach. But Boyd was injured during a training camp practice on 2 August and was carted from the field.
Boyd continued to be present all season long while healing from his surgery.
“He’s been a part of what we’re doing,” Glenn commented. “Certainly, he attends every game. He’s fully engaged. As one of the league’s best on special teams, he’s done a really good job of helping the other guys we have.”
Boyd, from Texas, played his first four seasons with Minnesota after his selection in the later rounds by the Vikings out of UT in 2019. He joined the Arizona Cardinals in last year and moved to Houston’s squad subsequently. Boyd signed a one-year contract for $1.6 million with the Jets in March.
