No less than 64 Dead in Rio de Janeiro's Most Extensive Police Raid on Gangs
No less than 64 civilians lost their lives in a law enforcement action cracking down on the criminal organization Comando Vermelho in the Brazilian city's northern districts - the largest and deadliest raid in the area's history.
Four security agents lost their lives during the security mission in the neighborhoods of Alemão and Penha, state officials stated. More than 80 suspects were detained.
Intense confrontations erupted when approximately 2,500 police forces moved in on the morning of the operation. The criminal organization countered with armed resistance, setting fire to barriers and launching explosives via unmanned aircraft, authorities said.
The UN Human Rights Office expressed being "appalled" by the security action, demanding "swift and comprehensive examinations".
Raid Aftermath
The informal settlements close to Rio's airport is considered to be the central command of one of Brazil's most powerful illegal networks.
Local authorities stated no less than 50 of the fatalities were "identified by authorities as alleged offenders".
Numerous individuals were injured, including non-combatants affected by the violence.
Local Reaction
Locals have described the mountainous region - inhabited by approximately 300,000 individuals - to a "war zone" since the raid started.

Gang Growth
The Comando Vermelho organization has been increasing their control throughout the region, expanding narcotics distribution networks and power in the informal settlements.
Security forces reported in excess of 200kg (441lb) of illegal substances were seized in the raid, in addition to dozens of firearms.
