Pacific Bluefin Tuna Sells for Unprecedented Sum of $3.2 million at Tokyo Auction
A bulky Pacific bluefin tuna created waves at the Tokyo's Toyosu fish market this Monday, garnering a record-breaking bid of 510.3 million yen (3.2 million US dollars; £2.4m) during the market's inaugural auction of the new year.
The top bid for the 243kg fish came from the operator of a nationwide sushi chain, which operates locations throughout Japan and internationally.
"The year's tuna heralds a prosperous start," stated the entrepreneur, a familiar participant at the annual new year's auction.
Known as the Tuna King, this entrepreneur is famous for making substantial bids for premium bluefin tuna at these high-profile January auctions.
Bidding Shock and Historic Precedent
After the auction, the winner admitted to reporters that he was "taken aback at the amount," stating, "I expected we would be able to acquire it a little for less, but the price skyrocketed rapidly."
This latest acquisition surpasses his own record purchases:
- He secured a tuna for 56.5 million yen away in 2012.
- He bid 155 million yen the following year.
- In 2019, he acquired a tuna for 333.6 million yen (2.1 million dollars).
Even after once remarking that he thought he "bid too high," he has now gone on to shatter his personal record yet again.
A Tradition of High Prices
The first auction at the Toyosu fish market is notoriously known for sky-high prices. The previous year, the initial tuna was purchased for 207 million yen by a separate food company, which indicated the fish would be available at its restaurants across Japan.
The high-energy activity at the fish market during these early morning auctions has evolved into a major spectacle in Tokyo. Monday's auction, which began around 05:00 local time, was no different.
Immediate Consumption
The extremely valuable tuna was promptly processed for patrons at the winner's sushi chains soon after the auction was finished.
"I feel like I've begun the year in a auspicious way after consuming something so auspicious as the year begins," remarked one satisfied diner.
