For much of the concluding season of *Stranger Things*, Holly Wheeler and Max Mayfield are held captive within a psychic prison constructed from the recollections of the villain Henry. Their mission for an escape route in episode 6 forces them to relive a defining event from Henry's early years—an event that may just hold the key to defeating him permanently.

Spoiler Warning: The following reveals crucial plot points for the concluding episodes.

The Discovery in the Tunnel

When she finds Max in the mental landscape known as Camazotz, Holly discovers she is taking refuge in a cave that Henry is terrified of. An accidental discovery a spyglass taken from Henry's old home helps Holly understand that the danger lies not within the cave. When she lines up her view through the cap, she and Max plummet into a deep mine shaft.

There, they witness a child version of Henry find an wounded, fearful individual. When Henry tries to help, the man reacts violently, striking Henry in the hand. In a desperate act of self-defense, Henry ends the threat with a rock. "Is this what corrupted him?" Holly wonders aloud. The answer is affirmative, but the event wasn't just a fight for life.

Similar to other plot points of the final season, the significance of the mine shaft incident was first explored the live show Stranger Things: The First Shadow.

An Interdimensional Incident and Stolen Research

The play reveals the infamous Philadelphia Experiment, which allegedly sent a vessel into a dimension dubbed the Abyss. Demogorgons assaulted it, and the lone returnee was the ship's commander, who emerged in a vegetative state with an entirely new blood.

That survivor's offspring, Martin Brenner, attempted to recreate this phenomenon in the Nevada desert. One of his scientists took experimental components to give to the Soviets, who were desperate to launch their parallel research. This spy in the cavern is that employee.

The Briefcase's Contents

Based on what is known about Brenner's work, the case almost certainly contained vials of the unique blood type. In the scene, Henry is bleeding from his hand. He likely becomes contaminated upon contact with the blood, leading to the development of his psychic abilities—powers he would inadvertently transfer to the test subjects Brenner would experiment on.

Another possibility, the box could have held exotic matter that eventually found its way to Hawkins Laboratory, where it helps stabilize the Upside Down. The prequel shows that young Henry was transported in the Abyss, coming back after half a day as a different person. From then on, he battles the control of a sinister presence, reminiscent of how the character Will was possessed by the shadow monster in season 2.

The Power of Fear

Henry's enduring terror associated with the mine highlights how deeply scarring the event was for him. While he controls the collective consciousness and works to collapse the Abyss into Hawkins, a fragment of his psyche still exists. Vecna uses fear, and the narrative points to a showdown between him and Will, who has deliberately faced his greatest terrors to fortify himself.

Will's growth has taken a weapon from Vecna. More importantly, Will now understands what Vecna himself fears, which could provide a decisive edge in the ultimate battle ahead.
