The Fashion Icon Antony Price, Renowned for Creating Looks for David Bowie and Duran Duran, Passes Away at Age 80.
Antony Price, the groundbreaking UK-based designer responsible for many legendary styles worn by musical icons like Bowie and members of Roxy Music, as well as Queen Camilla, has passed away at the age of 80.
He was celebrated for his sculptured silhouettes and performative fashion, including the pastel suits that appeared in the iconic band Duran Duran's landmark music video for "the song Rio".
"Remembering him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the group posted a remembrance on social media."
Price's death comes less than a month after he debuted his most recent collection in London, which was his first major show in over 30 years. Singer Lily Allen showcased a dress inspired by the famous black velvet "revenge dress" once worn by the late Princess Diana.
A Lasting Legacy
Born in Yorkshire in 1945, Price relocated to London in the early 1960s to attend the renowned Royal College of Art.
Upon completing his studies, he commenced his career designing menswear at the company Stirling Copper and was behind the form-fitting, button-fly pants that Sir Mick Jagger famously wore during The Rolling Stones' Gimme Shelter tour in the late sixties.
He established his eponymous line in 1979 and presented his inaugural collection a year later. The show was launched by creations worn by the famed model Jerry Hall, who also wore the wedding dress Price designed for her for her wedding to Sir Mick Jagger.
Partnerships with Stars
A long-time collaborator of musical chameleon David Bowie, Price was the mind behind the distinctive jacket the star wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His trademark skill to merge menswear and womenswear along with his expert craftsmanship in designing form-fitting garments cemented his status as a "genuine original," as stated by the British Fashion Council.
By the 1990s, he started creating pieces for Camilla, now Queen Consort, which included a number of outfits for her US tour following her marriage.
With a vocation that covered half a century, Price held his ultimate fashion presentation in London recently in partnership with the design house 16Arlington.
