The Porcine Pardon: Pig Named Six Seven Granted Clemency by Miami-Dade Mayor.
Although not quite at the identical stature as sparing holiday birds, but the Miami-Dade County mayor experienced a ceremonial pardon event this week by ritually sparing the life of a pig named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava executed the holiday gesture at the Cuban-style Latin Cafe 2000 in the center of Miami’s Little Havana neighborhood.
“This pig is innocent. Clemency is justified for her. Her criminal record is spotless,” stated the mayor in a speech with obvious nods to the sheer volume of pardons issued from the start of the beginning of a second term in office.
“If we disregard eating 6 or 7 apples per day,” the mayor added. “Let this swine have a prosperous future away from worry.”
The event, which both honors and questions the area's customary feast of feasting on pork during the holidays, was created to mirror the traditional fowl clemency at the White House.
The swine, provided by a Coral Gables firefighter, was christened after the popular vernacular phrase of young people exclaiming “six-seven” – inspired by a musical verse – often seemingly at random. The trend became so widespread that a leading lexicon site recently declared “six-seven” its top term for the year.
A Future Secured
The pardoned swine is now destined to live out its days at a countryside refuge “away from grills and cookware”, according to the ceremony's official statement.
“The annual pig pardon has become one of our favorite ways to kick off the holiday season,” said Eric Castellanos, in a notably cheerful message.
“It embodies the spirit of Miami: vibrant, varied, and rooted in traditions that unite the community. Each year, we are delighted to mark tradition and kindness in a way unique to Miami.”
Guests enjoyed a vegetarian menu of croquettes and strong coffee as they toasted the swine's new lease on life.
