Thomas Tuchel Wants Jude Bellingham's Passion Provided England's Star Sets Aside Egotism at the Door.
A single omission proved sufficient. Another and it could have seemed spiteful from the England manager, a coach who is far too wily not to understand that winning the World Cup is probably going to require help from Jude Bellingham, even if it is equally up to the player to adapt to the strategic frameworks and player rankings required with England now that he is back in the manager's welcoming fold.
The manager seeks Bellingham's edge, his passion, but it is about using it constructively. Personal talent is important but the squad have learned the hard way that there is a price to pay when fame takes over. Still, a message has been sent.
Bellingham was given food for thought after being left out of last month’s squad. He watched England qualify at the tournament without him. He saw Morgan Rogers shine as a counterpressing attacking midfielder. He listened as the coach mention loving the squad's spirit and values. Naturally, he has reacted in champion style, netting important strikes for Real Madrid against their rivals and Juventus. His selection was inevitable; leaving him out again would have left his World Cup hopes in serious doubt.
The expectation is that the manager will have a midfielder concentrating on frightening rivals rather than teammates. Ultimately, on a pure footballing level, there is little benefit to creating tension with an elite performer in the world. The ideal scenario is that his period on the sidelines has shown him that playing for one's country is a precious, uncertain thing. Tuchel, for his part, can now throw a protective shield around the 22-year-old after showing that he is unafraid to make big calls.
“No issue exists regarding him, and no concern with the character,” Tuchel commented. “Bellingham just has the edge. You need a sharp mentality to succeed at the top that he reached. Everyone need to help him and establish a atmosphere where he can channel this edge towards opponents and towards the goals we are striving for as a team.”
The star took up most of the attention at Tuchel’s squad announcement for the upcoming final group games against Serbia and the other. Who else? Indeed, what about another talent? Here is another prodigious playmaker requiring love and guidance. Foden has not played for the national team since spring and has struggled to perform well recently but Tuchel could not ignore the player after how he played in Manchester City’s win versus the German side this week.
The question, however, is the best way to deploy the attacking talents at England’s disposal. Rogers and Eberechi Eze merit inclusion and there will be compelling reasons to pick Cole Palmer once he recovers from a ongoing injury. Is selecting multiple creators to the tournament be excessive? The previous manager never found the correct balance at the European Championship. He compromised by squeezing both stars into the starting lineup, cramping Harry Kane’s style as a result.
It seems unlikely Tuchel doing similar if it harms the team harmony. There is room for a single playmaker, with fast wide players on the wings. Clear roles is beneficial. He is in as a central attacker. The new call-up, called up for the first time, is a central midfielder and the recalled Adam Wharton will vie with another player as a defensive midfielder. There will also be no position on the wing for the City star, who has to be through the middle. The coach prefers him near Kane. “It does not make sense to tell Phil: ‘We want you on the pitch but there’s no space in your preferred role, could you fill in at left wing? Can you play other flank?’” he said. “Phil is to feature in the central attacking zone, through the center. I've long had this fantasy regarding him for a long time. I think it suits him the most.”
He agreed there are occasions when Foden has seemed out of sorts in an national jersey. “You feel almost like, ‘Does he like it?’ And a player like him who has obvious passion for the game, then clearly something is not right, whether it's the position, the setup, I don’t know.
“In my opinion he is also so used to representing Man City in a specific system, with a defined role. Believe he profits greatly from clear instructions. What is my position? Where exactly am I to receive the ball? When should I to accelerate the match? What are my to defensive duties?”
The manager discussed Bellingham bursting through for easy finishes and the other drilling in strikes from 18 yards. He added he has a extended list of many candidates. Morgan Gibbs-White, others, the goalkeeper and the midfielder have dropped out. A new face is recognized for his excellent performances for City at defense. Interest abounds.
The omission of Ollie Watkins means there is no direct replacement for the captain in this squad. Interestingly, he hinted at using the playmaker as a deep-lying striker versus one opponent or the other. Anthony Gordon, the United forward, Bellingham and the winger are other options should he be absent. Since the place is booked, this is an opportunity for trying new things.
Meanwhile, it is also a chance to develop Kane’s relationship with Bellingham going. It's surprising that one must look back to Bellingham assisting the captain to score in a friendly win versus Scotland in over a year ago to find the one and only time in many appearances for the national team when the duo linked up for a score. Tuchel will know that the two stars only passed to each other once during England’s draws with Denmark and Slovenia at the European Championship. Their partnership is missing.
“At this point at some point it becomes the responsibility of the players,” Tuchel stated. He is not afraid to speak frankly. There is still a sense of Bellingham under scrutiny. He may not be assured to begin against Serbia and Albania. Tuchel wants Bellingham onside but he will be monitoring him closely. Leave the ego outside. Doing so could turn a very strong squad into an even better one.
