Tracking the Venezuelan-affiliated Tanker Reportedly Pursued by American Maritime Authorities

Our team is analyzing images and video posted this morning that purport to show the aftermath of a alleged car bomb blast that authorities in Russia state killed a senior military officer in Moscow.

Officials in Russia stated that Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov was inside the vehicle that detonated and that he later died to his wounds. A probe is under way.

Our starting point to check the location of where the images were from relied on posts indicating the explosion happened on Yasenevaya Ulitsa in the southern district of the Russian capital.

We used street-view imagery on digital map platforms and the Russian search engine Yandex Maps to match the unique yellow colour of a nearby apartment building seen in the footage.

Identifying other buildings, lamp-posts and the road configuration verified the exact location the footage were taken.

We also checked that the video clips were recent and that the images had not been digital alteration.
